Why Choose Alpine Sky

Learn What Makes Us Different

Temperament & Health

We prioritize both, equally, in every breeding decision. Because many of our families pursue the therapy path, it's critical that genetics support both soundness and temperament.

  • Temperament: All of our dogs are certified therapy dogs through Canines for Service, proof that our genetics are producing the stability, gentleness, and trainability we breed for. We actively volunteer with them in our community because, to us, that certification isn't just a credential; it's the standard.

  • Health: Alpine Sky Goldens We also ensure every dog has the important health clearances needed to minimize the risk of passing on genetic disorders in our puppies and dogs.

Our Standards & Certifications

Alpine Sky Goldens holds the AKC Bred with H.E.A.R.T. certification through the American Kennel Club (AKC), a distinction that reflects our ongoing commitment to responsible, ethical breeding. H.E.A.R.T. stands for Health, Education, Accountability, Responsibility, and Tradition. Earning this certtification requires breeders to test the health of all breeding stock in accordance with AKC Breed Parent Club recommendations, pursue continuing breeder education annually, comply with the AKC Care and Conditions Policy, and accept full responsibility for the health and well-being of every puppy produced.

Breeder Selection

Beyond health clearances and temperament, one of the most important things to evaluate in a breeder is how their adult dogs live. Our dogs are NEVER kept in kennels; they are fully integrated into our family life, and since all are certified therapy dogs they are often out in the community spreading comfort and joy. They join us on weekly hikes, restaurant outings, dog friendly events, travel with us on vacations, and sleep in our bedrooms (and, yes, occasionally our beds!). Goldens are built for human connection, and we will never buy our dogs from breeders who treat them as a business commodity rather than a cherished family member.

Pro Tip

If you haven’t yet read or listened to Kerry Nichols’ Puppy Brain: How Our Dogs Learn, Think, and Love. We can’t recommend it highly enough. The chapter on choosing a breeder is well worth a read on its own, but whether you're a first-time puppy parent or adding to your family, Puppy Brain is one of the best tools we know of for building a confident, connected relationship with your dog from day one. We ask all of our Alpine Sky puppy families to read it as part of their preparation for bringing a new puppy home…and for good reason. Kerry’s insights into how puppies learn, bond, and experience the world gives a meaningful head start in those critical first weeks together.

Early Conditioning

Our puppies are raised on a structured early-development curriculum that begins at just three-days-old. This includes Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) and Early Scent Introduction (ESI) from days 3–16, along with sound and surface exposure, problem-solving games, and intentional daily handling. We invest countless hours in each individual puppy throughout their first eight weeks of life - building the confident, curious, and emotionally balanced dogs that have gone on to become exceptional therapy dogs and beloved family companions. You can see videos and examples of our practices on our Puppy Training page.

Family Involvement

Unlike most breeders, we invite families to participate in the early conditioning process. We take every necessary precaution to protect developing immune systems, but we also believe in the value of early socialization, so we’ve built in protocols that make both possible. It's one of the most meaningful parts of what we do at Alpine Sky and, for our puppy families, it creates a truly special experience from the very start.

Temperament Testing

At seven weeks, our puppy and therapy dog trainers visit our home to conduct Volhard Aptitude temperament testing with each puppy. Local families also have access to our trusted puppy trainer for discounted private classes and in-home consultations. He also offers Canine Good Citizen (CGC) courses/certifications, and therapy dog preparation courses. Our therapy dog trainer subsequently works with families on certifications for those that pursue this path.

Comprehensive Puppy Guide & Take-Home Manual

From the moment your puppy's litter arrives, Alpine Sky is by your side. We provide a detailed Puppy Preparation Guide during the first week the puppys arrive, so your family has time to get ready and feel confident before the big “take home” day. Throughout the 8-week waiting period, you'll receive ongoing communication and support from us every step of the way.

At pickup, you'll receive a thoughtfully curated Take-Home Manual packed with everything you need for a smooth transition: daily routine guidance, feeding instructions, tips for children and puppies, pet insurance information, your vaccination records and first vet check documentation, AKC registration papers, pedigrees, AKC Microchip Reunite enrollment paperwork, and more.

Puppy Training & Support

Before your puppy comes home, we set you up to feel confident, prepared, and ready. Our puppy trainer, Luke, continues the foundation we've built, and our Alpine Sky Discounted Training Package makes it easy and affordable to stay on track.

The bundle Luke offers our families is $500 and includes:

  • 4 one-hour in-home consultations

  • 6 private weekly puppy classes with Alpine Sky littermates

  • A fun puppy reunion at the end of each session

Luke’s puppy classes are a great compliment to the individual sessions, and an opportunity to practice training with support in a group setting along side litter mates. We always have a mini reunion afterwards which is fun for everyone!

Our families truly appreciate having Luke to guide them, and most get on his calendar for their 1st consult the week their puppies go home to ensure a good start. And everyone enjoys supporting one another through our puppy group chat.

Special Note: If there are puppy classes in progress we often invite families to meet us, our dogs, Luke, and our puppies to observe the classes. It is a great way to learn about our program and meet us in person, and for us to meet you. Please ask if interested!

Ongoing Support from Alpine Sky

We attend most of the training sessions because we love staying connected with our families long after the puppies go home. We host occasional reunions and extend invitations to therapy dog visits for families whose dogs go on to get certified. Our kids are in college, so we're on the UNC and NC State campuses often for therapy dog events serving students and staff. This is an example of an event we invite our families to join, if interested.

Our Community & Commitments

We are proud members of the Golden Retriever Club of America and the Tarheel Golden Retriever Club, and we adhere to their breeder code of ethics. Because our commitment to this breed extends well beyond our own litters, we actively support our local Golden Retriever rescue through volunteering, partnering on fundraisers, and direct financial contributions.

Join Our Facebook Community

One of the best ways to get a feel for who we are is to scroll through our Facebook group: recent litters, therapy dog visits, marching in parades with the Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue, and reunions with our families and dogs tell our story better than words can.
